JRE hosted an open day event and energy workshop at Nakakyushu Onitayama Wind Farm in Miyazaki Prefecture. This is the third year since we started this event and university students from Kanto, Kansai and Kyushu (members of international NGO, Habitat for Humanity Japan (hereinafter, "Habitat")) and local high school students from Miyazaki Prefectural Gokase Secondary School (27 students in total) as well as their related parties participated in this event.
In the morning, the students learned about the renewable energy and visited the wind farm. Several students entered in the windmill tower at a time and attentively listened to the explanation by JRE employees, looking at the control panel, elevator and other equipment, and posed questions.
In the afternoon, they did group work in mixed teams consisting of university and high school students under the theme, "Think about energy policies for an imaginary country." Each group analyzed the interests of various stakeholders, examined policies and presented them as the prime minister of the imaginary country. JRE employees and Habitat staff joined each group as mentors and supported them. After the presentation, JRE and Habitat explained the details of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and actual efforts, and asked the students to consider which of the SDGs the policies they had examined contribute to or negatively affect.
After the workshop, we received comments from the students. Some of the comments are as follows: "You gave me an opportunity to think about renewable energies and SDGs more deeply." "I learned various interests and the multifaceted approach." "I widened my perspective by mingling with local high school students."
On the following day, the university students did volunteer activities in an area affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake (Nishiharamura) as members of Habitat. JRE supported this training event in Kyushu including the volunteer activities in general.
JRE will continue to organize wind farm open day and other events to ponder energy in the future. We hope that we can contribute to creating a sustainable society by not only holding open day events but also giving opportunities for particularly young generations to think, talk and make decisions from various perspectives.
